Fun Chess.com alternatives when you want something different

If you want another broad place to play chess, look at Lichess. If you want a different kind of session, consider puzzles, a computer game, or a story campaign. Play Story Chess is an option when what you want is a cinematic adventure around your chess.

The important question is what feels missing from your next session. Switching websites and changing experiences are not always the same decision.

First, name the change you want

“I want an alternative” can mean several things:

If you mainly want a new feature or different access terms, compare that feature directly. If you are tired of the repeated match-and-result rhythm, look at the structure of the activity.

When a story is the change you want

In a campaign, you can look forward to the next scene as well as the next game. You have someone to meet, a reason for the encounter, and a place in a larger sequence.

The Glass Syndicate begins at an elite tournament in Montenegro. You are undercover. Severin Vey is the contact who can introduce you further into the organization. Win his trust across the board, and the fiction gives the result a consequence.

That is a different reason to sit down at the board. It does not require abandoning the site where you play friends or follow competitive chess.

What Play Story Chess is—and what to check

The experience is single-player. You play real chess against the computer while following cinematic scenes and chapters. You can choose a starting level and begin The Glass Syndicate as a guest.

The Glass Syndicate is the first adventure, and its opening part is free. Knight of the Round Table, a King Arthur story, is also available. Beyond the free opening, boards are free at one a day, or unlimited with Story Chess Premium at $4.99 a month. Other stories in the selector are clearly labeled when they are coming soon.

Read how the game works for level selection, progression, and the role of wins. Read the access guide before depending on a save from a different browser or device.

You may not need a new website

If you still want the same kind of game, a different time control or opponent arrangement may be enough. If you want instruction, choose a specific lesson. If you do not feel like playing chess at all, a break is a reasonable choice.

The point is to choose an activity you want, not to make yourself enjoy another queue.

Our article on when online chess feels repetitive offers a way to think through that choice.

A practical recommendation

Choose Lichess if you want to inspect another general chess platform. Choose a focused exercise if you want a problem to solve. Choose a campaign if you want the satisfaction of continuing a story.

A change of website can also mean a change of experience. Compare three ways to enjoy chess online.

For the campaign option, meet The Glass Syndicate or open the story selector.
